Steve Nash story is a hoax: he's not quitting basketball
The Phoenix New Times is currently running a story claiming that Stevie Nash is leaving the Suns as of November 15th to pursue a political career in Canada:
A mere week into the 2010 NBA campaign and the Phoenix Suns' season hopes have been annihilated for this year and many years to come. Superstar point guard Steve Nash has informed Suns management he's leaving the team permanently November 15 to pursue a political career in his native Canada. Nash's long-term goal is eventually to become prime minister of Canada, the country's highest position. To that end, he's entering the Victoria, British Columbia, mayor's race and must almost immediately establish residency to run for office.
The story quickly went viral on Twitter and other social networks. But rest assured Suns fans, Suns.com has a statement up refuting the article:
A humorous article has been published by the Phoenix New Times joking that Steve Nash is retiring to enter Canadian politics. We want our fans to rest easy. THIS IS A HOAX!! Happily, Steve continues to be a member of our team.
And a local news station agrees that the story is bologna.
Yup, the Phoenix New Times has done it again. I'm not sure what "it" was supposed to be though -- was this supposed to be an Onion-like joke or prank? Maybe at the end of the story they identify it as such -- I wouldn't know because New Times stories are so doggone long I can never get to the end of them (but the story's author Barry Friedman is apparently known for hoaxes).
Hey, I'm all for jokes, but if your "newspaper" has a history of egregiously poor research, reporting, and fact-checking, perhaps you should shy away from them. In 2009 the paper ran a story by Niki D'Andrea about a ridiculous NBA tattoo cap, saying that NBA teams would be limited to 61% arm and neck tattoo coverage per team. The article was based on "research" that happened to be an obviously satirical blog post by a comic writer. By the way, this completely false story ran on the cover of the paper... during All Star Weekend... when the All Star Game was in Phoenix. Smarten up, New Times.

Well, not bad, if he decides to enter the political arena, and run for public office. He has the right if he goes for it, and we can't tell, one day, we are reading and looking in the print media, for a Prime Minister Steve Nash, of Canada, because, he is that very famous person, and the voters, find it easier to remember when they are already inside the polling place!!!!!!!!!! GO STVE NASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
