Appalachian State to retire jersey of QB who starred in famous upset over Michigan

Armanti Edwards is a legend at Appalachian State. Frankly, he and the teammates he played with should be considered legends and heroes for underdogs everywhere.

For the uninitiated, Edwards was the quarterback of the App State team that went into the Big House back in 2007 and upset No. 5 Michigan, 34-32, in a Week 1 game. He also led the Mountaineers to two FCS national titles, which was part of a streak that saw them win three straight from 2005 to 2007.

As such, Appalachian State announced that it will retire Edwards' No. 14 jersey this fall. The ceremony will occur during halftime of the Appalachian State-Georgia Southern game on Nov. 25.

"We are thrilled to honor Armanti's immense legacy at App State by retiring his No. 14 jersey," director of athletics Doug Gillin said in a statement. "His impact as the most decorated quarterback in school history includes leading the team to back-to-back national championships and the historic win at Michigan. Armanti will always be known as one of the greatest Mountaineers to ever wear the Black and Gold."

Coming into Ann Arbor as a massive underdog against a team that was thought to be a national championship contender, Edwards completed 17-of-23 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions against the Wolverines. He also rushed for 62 yards and a score.

Edwards was the star of the game, but the lasting moment will be Appalachian State's blocked field goal that saved the win and secured the upset.

Edwards was a four-time First-Team All-American, a two-time FCS National Player of the Year and boasted a 42-7 record as a starter. He was nominated for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.
