In a recent interview on ESPN Wisconsin’s Wilde & Tausch, Gordon revealed that the last thing he would recommend to his future son would be to play running back. According to the two-time Pro-Bowler, playing this position is one of the biggest regrets he has, especially considering all the money he missed out on:
“If I’m blessed enough to have a son, don’t even ask me to play running back,” he said. “You not playing. Go play baseball or something. Go figure this out. … Running back is out of the question. There’s no way. There’s no way you gonna play. … It’s not really worth it.”
Gordon says he would recommend that his son play wide receiver or cornerback instead. Given the massive contracts star players in these positions make, Gordon himself rues the opportunity of being able to play DB when he first arrived with the Badgers:
“Actually I was hesitant on going to Wisconsin because I thought they wanted me at DB,” he said. “The money they making, I wish I would have stayed at DB.”

Gordon is an elite athlete and he likely would have still been a great player as a defensive back. If this were the case, then it’s also likely that he would have been even richer than he is today.
As of the moment, Melvin Gordon still has no team in the NFL. The Denver Broncos cut the Kenosha, Wisconsin native in November and no team has picked him up just yet. Now entering his ninth season in the league, it is clear that Gordon still has a lot of gas left in the tank. It should only be a matter of time before a side offers him a new deal. Right? I guess Gordon would have had more assurances if he opted to play DB back with the Badgers.
