Oklahoma football scores major transfer portal win after defensive weapon commitment

The Oklahoma football team is going to have their hands full next season in the SEC, and because of the move, this is a crucial offseason for the Sooners. Oklahoma had a solid year last season, but their schedule in 2024 is going to be much more difficult. They have a lot to do to get ready for the season, and one thing they can do is add more talent via the transfer portal. The Sooners have brought in 16 transfers so far, and the latest is Damonic Williams.

Damonic Williams is transferring to the Oklahoma football team from TCU football, and he just finished up his sophomore season with the Horned Frogs. Williams is a defensive lineman, and he should help the Sooners get stronger at the line of scrimmage in 2024.

“A major addition has been secured for the Oklahoma Sooners out of the transfer portal,” A report from 247 Sports said. “Former TCU defensive tackle Damonic Williams has announced his decision to commit to OU and join the program ahead of its move to the Southeastern Conference.”

This is a big pickup for Oklahoma. The Sooners are going to be in a much harder conference next season, and one of the most important areas of the game is going to be the line of scrimmage. Williams has had two good seasons in college so far and he should be a valuable piece along the d-line.

Williams came in and made an immediate impact during his freshman season at TCU in 2022. He totaled 27 tackles and he had 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Those are impressive numbers for a freshman, and he had an even better year in 2023.

Last season, Damonic Williams finished the year with 33 total tackles and three sacks. Oklahoma football is hoping that with another offseason under his belt, Williams will be able to get even better before the 2024 season and continue to improve.

Other notable Oklahoma football transfers

The Oklahoma football team knows how important play at the line of scrimmage is, and they have been attacking those areas in the transfer portal as half of their pick ups will play on either the o-line or the d-line. Head coach Brent Venables has done of good job of adding players at those positions, he now just needs to get them ready in the offseason.

Perhaps the most important addition via the transfer portal, however, is quarterback Casey Thompson. Thompson played at Nebraska before transferring to FAU, and he is now coming to play for the Sooners. Last year’s starting QB, Dillon Gabriel, went to Oregon via the transfer portal, so Thompson will be battling with sophomore Jackson Arnold for the starting job.

Next year is going to be an interesting one for this Oklahoma football team. It feels like the 2024 season could go a lot of different ways for the Sooners, and it’s hard to know what to expect from this team in the loaded SEC. It’s going to be exciting to watch, and it will also set the tone for the future.
