TCU Football: Newton Nominated For Good Works Team
USA TODAY Sports

Josh Newton, TCU senior cornerback and pre-season All-American, has been nominated to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The award recognizes players for exemplary community service, academic dedication, and impact on and off the field. The award is considered one of college football's most coveted community service awards.

This recognition is presented by Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). It is the 31st year of this storied recognition. This year, 135 players from football divisions across the nation were nominated. A final 22-member team and honorary coach will be announced in September. Of those, 11 will come from the FBS division and 11 from the other football divisions. The public will be able to then vote for the honorary team captain. To be considered, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

Newton has volunteered over the last year at the Tarrant Area Food Bank and with Special Olympics in Fort Worth. He is also a regular visitor at local elementary schools and churches to read and speak to kids. Additionally, he has served as a youth football coach and participated in food drives in his hometown of Monroe, La.

Newton will represent TCU at Wednesday's Big 12 Media Day. He was First-Team All-Big 12 in his first season as a Horned Frog in 2022, playing a key role as TCU reached the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Starting all 15 games, Newton ranked second on TCU and in the Big 12 with 12 pass breakups, trailing only teammate and 2022 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson (15). Newton tied for second on the Horned Frogs with three interceptions, including one returned 57 yards for a touchdown in a win over Iowa State. He totaled 35 stops on the year. He recorded a tackle for loss at Colorado on the season's opening play and his first snap as a Horned Frog.

Newton's 47 career starts tie for the most among active players in college football.

Other Big 12 players nominated include Tyler Batty (BYU), Jowon Briggs (Cincinnati), Ethan Downs (Oklahoma), Mason Fairchild (Kansas), Zach Frazier (West Virginia), Jack Freeman (Houston), Christian Jones (Texas), Darien Porter (Iowa State), and Tyler Shough (Texas Tech).
