Amateur golf sensation Nick Dunlap has decided to step away from his scheduled appearance at this weekend's Farmers Insurance Open, citing personal reasons. Coming off of a fairytale victory at The American Express, a win that will go down in history as the first amateur triumph on the PGA Tour since 1991, Dunlap's announcement has been a bittersweet moment for his newfound overnight fan base.

"After a life-changing last 24 hours, I’ve decided to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open," Dunlap said, expressing a desire to soak in the moment with his nearest and dearest back in Alabama.

Dunlap's historic win not only etched his name beside golf legend Phil Mickelson's but also earned acclaim from Mickelson himself, who took to social media to celebrate the amateur's accomplishment.

"Such an impressive performance by Nick Dunlap. Congratulations on an incredible win. This is just the beginning," Mickelson shared in a post on X.

Golf enthusiasts had barely finished pondering Dunlap's potential after his win when he made the surprising decision to withdraw from his next event.

"It's so cool. Whether I had made that or missed that, if you would have told me that, you know, come Wednesday night I would have a putt to win this golf tournament, I wouldn't believe you," Dunlap said of his win at The American Express.

Eyes will undoubtedly follow the Alabama sophomore's next moves closely when he eventually returns to the field. With a PGA Tour exemption now secure through 2026 once he turns pro, the timeline for this transition remains one of the sport's most anticipated developments.
