2023 U.S. Open best bets: Our expert's picks for the weekend

We're officially through two rounds of the 2023 U.S. Open, and Rickie Fowler holds the outright lead (-10) after rounds of 62 and 68 to begin the tournament. Wyndham Clark (-9) is alone in second place, Rory McIlroy (-8) occupies third, and Xander Schauffele (-7) and Harris English (-7) round out the top five after two days at Los Angeles Country Club.

There has been a ton of movement in the betting market through two rounds, so let's target some valuable bets heading into the weekend, shall we?

Dustin Johnson +1200 to win (FD)

Dustin Johnson would be co-leading this tournament alongside Fowler if not for one bad hole. At the start of his second round, DJ went out of bounds of the par-4 second hole and made a quadruple bogey. He proceeded to make five birdies the rest of the day and salvage an even-par 70, and now he sits at 6 under and just four shots back of the lead.

Johnson has been rock solid aside from one hole, ranking sixth in the field in strokes gained: total through two rounds. He can make up four shots in a heartbeat.

Hideki Matsuyama +225 top 20 finish (DK)

I love Hideki Matsuyama's chances to get back into the mix this weekend.

The 31-year-old has been absolutely striping the ball through two rounds, as he ranks third in the field in strokes gained: tee to green. The issue has been his putting, where he ranks 148th out of 156 players so far. That won't last all week, and Matsuyama is still only two strokes back of 18th place. This is great value on a player who can go impressively low when the putter gets hot.

Tommy Fleetwood +330 top 20 finish (DK)

This is the same reasoning as my Hideki bet. Tommy Fleetwood shot +2 over the first two rounds despite ranking 13th in the field in SG: T2G, mostly because he ranked 135th in SG: putting. The Englishman has made a habit of going low on the weekends at majors and finishing with a backdoor top-20, so let's hope the putter turns around on Saturday and Sunday.
