Brian Harman chugs beer out of Claret Jug after The Open win

When you win your first major tournament, you can celebrate however you’d like. It was probably the most refreshing beer the 36-year-old golfer has ever tasted.

Harman was under par for every round at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. He opened the tournament carding a 4-under-par 67 on Thursday and shot a 65 on Friday, getting to -10 for the weekend. He then was -2 on Saturday and carded a final round of 70 to finish -13.

He defeated four golfers by six strokes, with Jason Day, Jon Rahm, Tom Kim and Sepp Straka all finishing The Open at -6.

“I’ve always had a self-belief that I could do something like this,” Harman said via ESPN. “It’s just when it takes so much time it’s hard not to let your mind falter, like maybe I’m not winning again. I’m 36 years old. [The] game is getting younger. All these young guys coming out, hit it a mile, and they’re all ready to win. Like when is it going to be my turn again?

“It’s been hard to deal with. I think someone mentioned that I’ve had more top 10s than anyone since 2017, so that’s a lot of times where you get done, you’re like, ‘Dammit, man, I had that one.’ It just didn’t happen for whatever reason.”

Harman’s previous two wins on the PGA Tour date back quite a while. He got his first victory at the John Deere Classic in 2014. Three years later, he earned a win at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2017.

Neither of those victories were as convincing as this weekend’s at the Open Championship. He won each of those first two tournaments by one stroke.

It is an especially impressive feat for Harman this year. He missed the cut at The Masters and PGA Championship, the first two majors of the year. The 36-year-old then finished tied-43rd in the U.S. Open.

Sometimes, it’s just your weekend on the course.
