Brooks Koepka, Zach Johnson under spotlight as Ryder Cup roster deadline nears

The U.S. Ryder Cup standings look a little different than they did about a month ago, and the conversation regarding Brooks Koepka's chances of making the team just got a whole lot more interesting.

Back on July 24, the PGA Championship winner was ranked fourth on the list of Ryder Cup-eligible golfers and would have been the only LIV Golf participant to make the team solely due to being in a top-six automatic qualifier position. After the BMW Championship, Koepka now finds himself outside of those top-six auto-qualifier spots. He can only make the team now if Zach Johnson selects him with one of the six captain's picks, which will be announced around Labor Day.

What are the chances Johnson selects Koepka with one of his captain's picks? If Johnson doesn't select him, is that a reflection of Koepka's play or of him simply joining Saudi Arabia's rogue golf league?

Data Golf gave Koepka a 53.05% chance of making the team a month ago following the Open Championship, which marked the final major of the year and the last time Koepka and other LIV golfers could earn Ryder Cup points. Now, Data Gold lists him as having a 22.2% chance of making the team. (If you were to bet on it, Koepka would be listed at 7-2 odds.)

Of course, that's just an estimation. What matters now is whether Johnson thinks Koepka is a good fit for the team.

Johnson said earlier in the year that he wouldn't include LIV Golf players on Team USA. He did, however, compliment Koepka ahead of the Open Championship while keeping his selection process vague.

"I wish he was still on the PGA Tour just because I enjoy watching him play and admire how he goes about his work," Johnson told Golf Digest at the time.

Johnson also has to keep Koepka's recent play and results in mind. He looked stealthy earlier in the season when he finished T2 at the Masters and won the PGA Championship on top of finishing in the top five in three out of four LIV Golf events. Later on, he finished T64 at the Open Championship and T38 at both of LIV's final events of the season.

Koepka isn't the only player who needs to be considered, either. Former Ryder Cup personnel Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are also on the outside of the top six looking in. Some LIV Golf fans also continue to insist that Bryson DeChambeau be one of Johnson's picks following his win at LIV Golf Greenbrier.

It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks as Johnson makes his final decision on which golfers will make up those final six spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. At this point, whether Koepka will be in the mix is anyone's guess.
