Denny McCarthy withdraws from Travelers Championship after positive coronavirus test

On Friday, Denny McCarthy withdrew from the Travelers Championship held at TPC River Highlands in Hartford after he became the third PGA Tour player confirmed to test positive for the coronavirus.

Nick Watney removed himself from last weekend's RBC Heritage after he returned the Tour's first positive test.

Earlier this week, Cameron Champ withdrew from the Travelers after he tested positive. Graeme McDowell and Brooks Koepka pulled out of the competition when caddies recorded positive tests. Chase Koepka and Webb Simpson voluntarily withdrew out of caution even though they tested negative for the virus.

Per ESPN's Nick Pietruszkiewicz, McCarthy opened his Travelers account with a 3-under 67 before he learned of his positive result.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan confirmed that players found ignoring recommended safety guidelines and protocols would face "serious repercussions" for endangering the Tour's "bubble" that is set up at each event site.

The Orlando Pride were forced to withdraw from the NWSL Challenge Cup that begins this weekend after the club discovered a coronavirus outbreak among players and coaches after some squad members allegedly visited a Florida bar at a time when cases are rising throughout the state.

Florida banned alcohol consumption at bars on Friday morning due to COVID-19 concerns.
