Fate of Ryder Cup to be decided later this month

The fate of the Ryder Cup will be decided later this month, chief executive officer Keith Pelley told the McKellar Journal podcast, according to ESPN. The European Tour and the PGA will have "conversations" about the Ryder Cup now that the schedules of both tours have been announced.

The Ryder Cup is still scheduled to be played from Sept. 25-27 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin despite the schedule disruption from the coronavirus pandemic. It seems the event could be held without fans, but by September things may be improved enough for the event to hold fans in a limited capacity. However, many players have voiced their displeasure with the Ryder Cup being held without fans including Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman believes a majority of competitors would like the Ryder Cup pushed back to 2021 because no one will want to play without fans.

"My personal hunch is that I don't see how it is going to happen, so I do not think that it will happen," McIlroy told BBC Sport. "I think the majority of players would like to see it pushed back until 2021 so that they can play in front of crowds and have the atmosphere that makes the Ryder Cup so special.

"The players are the ones that make the Ryder Cup. If they are not on board with it and don't want to play then there is no Ryder Cup. I see it being pushed back until 2021 and, honestly, I think that will be the right call."

Pushing the event back to 2021 could cause many challenges, including clashing with the already scheduled PGA Tour-hosted Presidents Cup which is set to take place from Sept. 30 - Oct. 3 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. The Olympics also were pushed back to 2021, which could cause issues for a rescheduled date.
