Jason Day playing solo at Travelers after negative coronavirus test

Jason Day saw his third-round tee time at the Travelers Championship pushed back, but it was by his doing. The 32-year-old requested a coronavirus test Saturday morning, which resulted in his tee time getting delayed as a precautionary measure, according to ESPN's Nick Pietruszkiewicz.

Day started the day nine shots behind leader Phil Mickelson and was supposed to tee off alongside Rafa Cabrera Bello and Roger Sloan. Instead, he started on the 10th tee by himself and played alone.

After he started his round, the PGA Tour announced Day had tested negative for the coronavirus. If he had tested positive, he would've been removed from the course immediately and isolated.

The PGA Tour has seen seven withdrawals this week related to the coronavirus. The caddies for Brooks Koepka and Graeme McDowell both tested positive, thus resulting in their withdrawals from the Travelers Championship. Chase Koepka, Brooks' brother also pulled out for precautionary reasons, while Cameron Champ and Denny McCarthy both had to bow out after testing positive for the virus.

In the midst of multiple players and caddies testing positive, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced stricter health and safety protocols and stated that golf will continue to be played. Additional testing will be available, and the scope has been broadened of those who need to be tested.

The Travelers Championship runs through Sunday and is followed up by the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit beginning on July 2.
