Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt Takes Ambiguous Stance On Extension Talks

The St. Louis Cardinals could be in the market for a new first baseman next year, pending Paul Goldschmidt's looming free-agency decision. 

While the organization's current priority is building a better pitching staff, it may be time to look into the future of their seven-time All-Star first basemen as well -- who gave a concerningly vague answer about staying with the Cardinals. 

Bally Sports' Jim Hayes asked Goldschmidt about his future with the Cardinals, and if he's considered staying with the organization for the remainder of his career. 

"I don't know, we'll see what happens," Goldschmidt told Hayes on "Cat's Corner" on Friday. "For me, I've just always tried to play the game. Any contractual stuff, leave that out. For me, it's just preparing for this year, trying to play well and help us win. Whatever else happens is going to happen."

Goldschmidt hit .268 with 31 extra-base hits including 25 home runs, 80 RBIs and a .810 OPS in 154 games last season. 

The former National League Most Valuable Player has one year left on his contract and hits free agency next fall.

It appears that Goldschmidt isn't too concerned with his future right now, and would rather focus on getting the Cardinals back to the top of the division.
