Kyle Schwarber to miss extended time with 'significant' hamstring strain

Washington Nationals slugger Kyle Schwarber has been one of the best hitters in baseball this season, but now his season will be put on hold as he suffered an injury during Friday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters Saturday, including MASN's Mark Zuckerman, that Schwarber will miss an extended period of time with a "significant" hamstring strain.

Schwarber suffered the injury during the second inning of Friday night's game while rounding first base following a single. He was removed from the contest shortly afterward and was replaced by Gerardo Parra

The 28-year-old is hitting .253/.340/.570 with 25 home runs and 53 RBI in 71 games this season. Schwarber hit 16 home runs in a 20-game span last month and was named the National League Player of the Month for June.

The loss of Schwarber is a significant blow to the Nationals, who entered play Saturday 40-40 and sit second in the NL East. In addition to Schwarber, Erick Fedde, Stephen Strasburg, Luis Avilan, Kyle Finnegan, Will Harris, Daniel Hudson, Tanner Rainey, Jordy Mercer and Andrew Stevenson are on the injured list.

Despite the injuries, Washington entered Saturday just 2.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets.
