Slade Cecconi Shines as Diamondbacks Secure Victory Over Giants
John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

Just hours before first pitch, Slade Cecconi received the news that he would be making his season debut with the Diamondbacks. Despite the short notice, Cecconi delivered an impressive six innings on the mound, propelling the Diamondbacks to a 5-3 victory over the Giants.

Initially slated to start for Arizona, Merrill Kelly was scratched from the lineup due to right shoulder discomfort. Consequently, the D-backs called up Cecconi from Triple-A to make his fifth major league start.

The Giants failed to score off Cecconi until the 5th inning. Through two outs in the 5th, the rookie had maintained a no-hitter. However, after a base hit, Mike Yastrzemski launched a two-run homer, giving the Giants a 2-1 lead.

Yet, Cecconi’s first major league win became possible thanks to the two runs the Diamondbacks scored in the top of the 6th. The rally ignited with a leadoff double from Joc Pederson, followed by Eugenio Suarez reaching on a throwing error. Gabriel Moreno drove in Pederson and Suarez with a base hit up the middle, putting the D-backs back in the lead.

In the 9th, the Diamondbacks added two insurance runs. Moreno led off the inning by reaching base and later scored on a Kevin Newman double into left field.

After Cecconi’s six innings on the mound, allowing only the two-run homer, Bryce Jarvis and Ryan Thompson preserved the lead with a couple of scoreless innings, despite some control issues. Jarvis stranded the bases loaded in the 7th.

Given the early-season injuries the Diamondbacks have faced, including Blaze Alexander departing early with hamstring tightness, this win was much-needed as their lengthy road trip still has six games remaining.

With a record of 11-12 on the year, Arizona will head to St. Louis for a 4:45 PM game against the Cardinals tomorrow. These two teams met a week ago, with the Diamondbacks securing a 2-1 series victory.
