The Phillies Have Most the Wins for the Second Time in the Live Ball Era

The Philadelphia Phillies earned a resilient comeback win Monday night, overcoming a two-run, ninth-inning deficit before defeating the New York Mets 5-4 in 10 innings. After another win over the Mets on Tuesday courtesy of an Aaron Nola complete game, the Phillies currently sit at 30-13. They’re the first club to reach 30 wins for the second time in the Live Ball Era (1920). The Phillies last accomplished the feat in 1976, when they reached their 30th win in just their 41st game of that season. They have a tight lead on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East division race on Tuesday.

The Phillies Keep on Rolling with Their 30th Win

The most impressive pitcher for the Phillies is Ranger Suarez. He’s the only seven-game winner in the majors. His 1.50 ERA is second in the league behind Shota Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs.

“This is as good of a start as the Phillies have had through a quarter of a season since 1993 and it just feels like every time they go out there, they have a chance to win because the guy on the mound gives them a chance to win,” said Gregg Murphy of the Phillies Radio Network. Murphy is right since it’s why they are winning games to begin with.

Beyond Suarez, the Phillies rotation has been stellar. Yet the lineup from Kyle Schwarber to Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos have been producing of late. The Phillies are posting a .760 OPS, which is good for second overall in the majors.

Fourth Most Steals in the Majors

The Phillies have 49 steals, good for fourth in the majors. They’ve only been caught stealing ten times as a group. Trea Turner, Bryson Stott and Johan Rojas have 29 of those 49 steals. The speed on the base paths has been a key element that’s been added to an already impressive offensive unit. Another interesting stat comes from Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Phillies are outscoring their opponents 64-23 in the first two innings of the game. With the mix of scoring runs early and dominating pitching, it’s clear that the Phillies are tough to beat in baseball.
