Allen, Texas police investigating ‘allegation’ against Michael Irvin

The police department in Allen, a suburb of Dallas, is investigating an allegation against former Cowboys star Michael Irvin.

Pro Football Talk broke the news on Thursday. But other than a confirmation of an investigation, there are few public details.

“There has been an allegation, but we are not prepared to release any details at this time due to our investigation being in its very early stages,” Allen PD spokesperson Jonathan Maness told PFT.

Levi McCathern, Irvin’s attorney, told PFT that the allegation “will turn out to be much ado about nothing.” He said the former Cowboys star turned NFL analyst “vehemently denies” the allegation.

“He didn’t do anything wrong or inappropriate,” McCathern said in regards to the allegation, which he said contained “absolutely no truth.” 

This isn’t the first time Irvin has faced misconduct allegations, even in the past year. In the leadup to last February’s Super Bowl in Phoenix, a Marriott employee accused Irvin of making harassing and inappropriate comments towards her. She worked for the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel, where Irvin was a guest.

The hotel asked him to leave. Meanwhile, the NFL Network and ESPN each pulled the former Cowboys great from their Super Bowl coverage. As the months passed, Irvin didn’t return to the NFL Network until right before the start of the NFL regular season. By that time, he’d settled a $100 million defamation suit he filed against Marriott. Terms of the settlement weren’t revealed. The former Cowboys superstar then took a job as a contributor to Fox Sports.

The Cowboys selected Irvin, the former Miami Hurricane, in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He was so dominant that it took until this season for a Cowboys receiver to break his team records for single-season receptions and yardage. CeeDee Lamb finally knocked Irvin from the top spot.

Irvin played 12 seasons in the NFL, all with the Cowboys. He suffered a spinal injury in October, 1999 and retired before the 2000 season. Seven years later, Irvin earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
