Analyst lays out reasons Eagles could try to trade into the top 10

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman believes free agency is when team should fill their roster needs and the draft is the time for them to add the best players available.

Which is why the Eagles, who don’t exactly have any glaring holes to fill heading into the draft, could take a big swing in Round 1 and trade up for a premier player they otherwise wouldn’t have a shot of landing in their current draft position.

If the Eagles were to contemplate making a bold move, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports laid out a scenario in which it could happen. Benjamin proposed a tread between Philly and New York Jets in which the Eagles would get the 10th overall pick plus the 72nd overall pick from the Jets in exchange for he No. 22 overall pick, the 50th overall pick and the 53rd overall pick.

“The Eagles probably wouldn't be inclined to make such a splash unless a top player at a position of importance slipped to the No. 10 spot,” Benjamin wrote. “Perhaps it's Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt, a potential successor for All-Pro Lane Johnson. Or Alabama cover man Terrion Arnold, a ready-made challenger for opposite Darius Slay. Or maybe even Crimson Tide edge rusher Dallas Turner, who could plug in opposite new signee Bryce Huff in the wake of Haason Reddick's departure.”

The deal makes sense for both sides.

The Jets don’t have a pick in the second round this year due to the Aaron Rodgers trade last offseason, so moving back 12 spots in Round 1 to acquire two second-rounders could be too good of a deal for Jets GM Joe Douglas to pass up.

The Eagles’ roster is in pretty good shape after signing running back Saquon Barkley, edge-rusher Bryce Huff, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, middle linebacker Devin White and cornerback Avonte Maddox last month, and moving up would allow them to acquire an embarrassment of riches at certain positions.
