Former Las Vegas Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels was known for bringing over former players and coaches from his days with the New England Patriots during his short tenure with the Silver and Black.

One of those players was veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, whom Las Vegas signed to a two-year deal last offseason. A lot has changed since then, including the firing of McDaniels and the promotion of Antonio Pierce, who served as Interim Head Coach before recently being hired as the full-time Head Coach.

The overnight mid-season change was quite surprising for Hoyer, as it was for many people in the building. Hoyer opened up about the event when he joined Thursday's edition of "The Jim Rome Show."

"I mean, when I look at it, I was only there for a limited time; I wasn't there for his first year," Hoyer said. "But Josh is an offensive genius. I've learned so much from him throughout my career and my time with him, and when I had an opportunity to go play for him, I jumped at it because it was something for me that his system and his philosophies, I really believe in.

"And sometimes, things don't take the right turns and decisions are made, and I was shocked how quickly that was. ... [I] wake up to that news and, obviously, I felt for him and his family. But I've been cut before, it's unfortunately, it's part of the business.

"And people see a lot of the great side of the business; there's a lot of downsides, too. And so, for me, it was, like I said, it was a unique opportunity, and having played against AP, and you see why he was such an integral part of those special Giants teams. He's just a natural leader.

"And so even though I'm a guy who went out there to play for Josh, I can appreciate AP [Pierce] and what he did and his energy and philosophy, too."

Hoyer spent three different stints with the Patriots. He and McDaniels were there together in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021. McDaniels served as New England's offensive coordinator for 13 seasons (two stints). He was also the quarterbacks coach for all but one (2020) of those seasons.

From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
