Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh Gets Brutally Honest On New Coaching Job

The Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as their head coach earlier this offseason, and Harbaugh is beyond excited.

This week, Harbaugh spoke about how great of a gig the Chargers’ head-coaching job is.

“They’ve been great. This is just true, it’s been the best damn job I’ve ever had to start out with,” Harbaugh said, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. “I hope that it ends that way, but it’s been a tremendous start. Hiring coaches, free agency — that’s not just one day, that goes for a while — getting ready for the draft. Really excited about the coaching staff and the amount of work that has been produced over the last month-and-a-half. It’s been a lot, they’ve done a great job. It’s been locked, cocked, ready to rock, just needed the players to come in, and we got that today. It’s been really good.”

Harbaugh coached in the NFL from 2011 through 2014 when he served at the helm for the San Francisco 49ers. During that time, he went 49-22-1 (including playoffs) and led the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance. The 49ers also won a pair of NFC West division titles, logged three double-digit win campaigns and made three playoff appearances under Harbaugh’s direction.

But apparently, he feels this job in Los Angeles could be even better.

“It just feels good,” Harbaugh said of getting to work. “It’s like the start of the new year — Happy New Year. That’s the way that it feels. It’s like that first day of school, or a family reunion, or homecoming.”

After his time in San Francisco, Harbaugh moved back down to the collegiate ranks and coached the University of Michigan. He led the Wolverines to a national championship this past season.

But now, it seems like Harbaugh is back where he belongs: the NFL.

“It just feels like there is a new lift and energy in the building,” he said. “I see that eagerness in the players. Maybe that’s just because I’m so eager, but I truly see it, an eagerness with our guys. A good first day.”

We’ll see if Jim Harbaugh can deliver in LA starting next season.
