Jake Luton Leads List Of Early Jaguars Roster Cuts

The ugly side of NFL training camp has arrived. Following their second preseason game, The Jaguars have made their first wave of roster cuts. In order to reduce their squad number to the mandated number of 85, five names had to be let go prior to Tuesday. And it seems that there is a little more clarity in the QB pecking order behind Trevor Lawrence…

Jake Luton was perhaps the most surprising name to be waived. Entering his third year in the NFL, Luton was drafted by The Jaguars in the 6th round back in 2020. The former Oregon State Beaver was released at the end of last year’s training camp, only to be re-signed last February. In his first stint in Jacksonville, Luton started three games – coming in for injured starter Gardner Minshew. In his short stint under center, Luton went 60/110 for 473 yards, with two touchdowns and six interceptions. He also added a score on the ground.

Jake Luton started the Hall of Fame game earlier this preseason as Lawrence was rested and CJ Beathard rehabilitated a groin injury. Despite arguably being outplayed by teammate Kyle Sloter, it was the former USFL quarterback who lost his job – with Doug Pederson opting to bring back UDFA rookie EJ Perry last week. Luton fared similarly against the Browns on Friday night as the third string QB. And despite Perry not seeing the field for the game, Pederson and the front office have decided time is up for Luton – again.

With CJ Beathard seemingly entrenched as the backup behind Lawrence, the QB3 job looks like Perry’s to lose. But outside of Luton, who else got the chop on Monday?
