Johnny Manziel blasts former teammate with the Browns for the way he was treated by him
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

It was a ticking time bomb from the moment the Cleveland Browns selected Johnny Manziel a decade ago.

Now with his NFL career over with for multiple years, Manziel had the chance to kick back and tell the stories from his two-year stint in the league.

Manziel joined Shannon Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay podcast for an extended interview that was very good. One story that Manziel shared was about the negative impact of a former teammate.

“My quarterback room was not a home for me because of Brian Hoyer,” Manziel said to Shannon Sharpe. “Brian Hoyer had been waiting on an opportunity to go really provide for his family, get an opportunity and he saw how much of an upper hand he had on me, and he didn’t hold back when it came to that. There were instances in the quarterback room early on where I would ask the same question a couple of times and he’d be at the head of the table and go, ‘Pfft, again? We’re doing this again? Keep him out of it. Cut that off.’ And I don’t have a bad word to say about Brian Hoyer. That is just fact of what happened in that room.”

Manziel went on to talk about how he was essentially belittled during film breakdowns and other quarterback meetings.

Johnny Football didn’t take well to Hoyer’s actions

“I’m getting dogged by a guy who’s supposed to be my teammate when I don’t know nothing. I’m trying to figure it out. I don’t know what Cover 3 is,” explained Manziel.

Manziel was a rookie in 2014 when Hoyer started 13 games for the Browns. During that same season, Manziel started two games for the Browns. Hoyer had a 7-6 record as a starter that season and Manziel was 0-2.

“At that point in time where I was and I’m the franchise guy, I could have used a little help,” Manziel said.

Hoyer was off the team in 2015 and Manziel started six games for the team that season. Hoyer has played with six teams since the Browns and appeared in three for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023.
