Los Angeles Rams Choose To Sign QB Who Can’t Play The First 2 Games Of The Regular Season
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams are signing a veteran quarterback to backup Matthew Stafford for the 2024 season. One problem: he can’t back up Stafford until Week 3.

Stetson Bennett likely won’t play in Week 1

That wouldn’t be too messy on most rosters. However, the Rams are in an unusual predicament this season. The Rams drafted Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of last year’s draft in the hopes he could eventually be their QB2. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay said in January he isn’t sure when Bennett will be back with the team after being placed on the non-football injury list in September.

The Los Angeles Rams signed Jimmy Garoppolo

Per Adam Schefter, the Rams added former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo will miss the first two games of the upcoming season

As previously discussed on GH, Garoppolo will miss the first two games of the 2024 season due to violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He does not plan to appeal the suspension, so the Rams will not be able to play him until Week 3.

Per Our Lads, Bennett is listed on the depth chart as QB2. For reasons mentioned above, it doesn’t appear likely Bennett will be the QB2 at the start of the season. The Rams QB3 is Dresser Winn, an undrafted rookie in 2023 who the Rams signed out of UT Martin.

The Rams hope Stafford can stay healthy for the entire upcoming season. It would be especially bad if Stafford had to miss any snaps before Week 3.
