New York Giants GM Addresses Quarterback Speculation Ahead of NFL Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have done due diligence on each of the top four quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft , but it doesn’t sound like it’s a foregone conclusion that Daniel Jones’ replacement will be the team’s selection with the No. 6 overall pick.

Jones, working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 season, told reporters earlier this week that he believes he is the Giants’ best option for the upcoming season, and it doesn’t sound like Schoen feels any added urgency to replace him.

There is, it sure sounds like, a very real possibility that Jones, Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock will be the top three quarterbacks on the Giants’ roster. Especially because New York is likely out of reach — without trading up, of Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye.

New York Giants’ Joe Schoen ‘No Pressure’ To Take Daniel Jones Replacement in NFL Draft

During the Giants’ pre-draft press conference, Schoen told reporters that there isn’t any added pressure to take a quarterback in Round 1.

“I don’t think so,” Schoen told reporters Thursday when asked if he needed to add a quarterback. “With Drew’s experience, he’s started games and played, and Daniel’s experience and what Tommy did last year and another year in the system, Tommy has come a long way. I think we can go into the season with the three that we have and I’d comfortable with that.”

Jones is set to enter the second-year of a $160 million contract extension, and Schoen says that he is “still confident” that he is the answer at quarterback.

Following Jones’ injury, and given the fact that the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has made just one postseason appearance while tossing 62 career touchdowns with 40 injuries, the Giants have spent time this offseason with Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy, and Maye, according to various reports.

However, as one source says, visits and workouts don’t necessarily telegraph what will happen during the draft.

“It’s a good quarterback class,” Schoen told reporters I think it’s deep. You look at some of the guys and the amount of games some of these guys have started and played, it’s impressive,” Schoen said. “Really haven’t seen a class like that with the number of quarterbacks that have started and played so many games at a high level.

“It’s been really fun to know these guys. Again, it’s a unique position. There are only so many people walking planet Earth that can play that position at a high level.”
