Saints' Sean Payton declines comment on Michael Thomas' tweet

New Orleans Saints All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas raised eyes via a controversial tweet that may or may not have been a response to a story claiming he ghosted the club for three months before having ankle surgery in June that is expected to keep him sidelined through the start of the 2021 regular season.

New Orleans head coach Sean Payton had little to say about the subject when asked on Monday.

"No. I don't want to have a press conference based on social media," Payton responded, per Kevin Patra of the official NFL website.

Thomas was limited to seven games last season because of his ankle, and Jeff Duncan of Nola.com recently reported the Saints advised the 28-year-old to have surgery much earlier in the offseason. Thomas allegedly wished to embrace a more conservative approach, something the Saints initially supported. However, Payton admitted in late July he wished his star wideout would've had the operation earlier.

"Obviously, we would've liked that to have happened earlier than it did -- and quite honestly it should have," Payton reportedly said on July 28.

Patra notes that Thomas is on a four-month timetable for his recovery, and it's possible he could miss at least the first five games of the upcoming campaign.
