The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 free agency period has been one to remember, sparking excitement among fans more than almost any offseason in recent memory. While the spotlight initially shone on the acquisition of former Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker Patrick Queen, who signed a lucrative three-year, $41 million deal, it's a quieter move that's now capturing attention thanks to Queen's presence.

In addition to securing Queen, the Steelers strengthened their defense by signing former Miami Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott to a two-year contract. However, what has surprised many fans is the behind-the-scenes role played by a former rival in fortifying the team's defensive ranks and adding depth to the safety position.

On Friday, Elliott sat down with Missi Matthews to discuss his decision to join the Steelers, shedding light on the pivotal role Queen played in his recruitment to Pittsburgh.

"He was like, 'do you wanna become a Steeler?' I was like, 'what do you mean?' He goes, 'I was talking to the GM, do you wanna become a Steeler?' I was like, 'freak yeah, bro, he** yeah, I'll come play with you; what are you talking about?' And so the next day, made it happen."

Drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Elliott has amassed an impressive resume, starting in 50 of his 57 career games. Over his five-year NFL career, he's tallied three interceptions, 17 passes defended, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three and a half sacks and 287 combined tackles.

As an under-the-radar player, Elliott earned high praise from Queen, his former teammate during the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Ravens. Now donning the black and gold, Elliott is poised to showcase his talents and make a significant impact with the Steelers, aiming to replicate his successes from his tenure with the Ravens on his new squad.

"When you play on either side of it, if you haven't made a play in that game or haven't won in that game, then you aren't officially a part of that team. I feel like I've made plays for the other team. It's time for me to make plays for this team. That's what I'm excited to do. Yeah, that's about it," Elliot said.

Having experienced the intensity of the Steelers-Ravens rivalry from the opposing side, Elliott is fueled by a desire for redemption against the team that was prepared to part ways with him. However, Queen's influence suggests a different narrative, indicating a reluctance to sever ties with his defensive comrade and a determination to continue their shared journey.

Steelers Get Two Former Ravens To Buy In

One of the fascinating aspects of the NFL is the intense division rivalries and the rich history that accompanies these matchups. Facing off against divisional opponents twice a year adds an extra layer of excitement to the season, as each encounter unfolds with its own unique dynamics. Regardless of a team's performance throughout the season, clashes between division rivals tend to evolve into gritty, hard-fought battles on the gridiron.

Securing a player directly from a divisional rival is always a significant boon for a team. While the Steelers didn't poach Elliott from the Ravens since he was no longer on their roster, his previous affiliation with the team adds an intriguing twist to his arrival in Pittsburgh.

With a desire to embrace a villainous role in the Steel City, Queen, a former rival, took it upon himself to help bolster the Steelers' ranks by bringing reinforcements from his former team. This strategic move not only strengthens the Steelers' roster but also adds an element of rivalry-driven motivation as Elliott seeks to make his mark against his former team with Queen.

Although the season is still a few months away, the anticipation among Steeler Nation is palpable as they eagerly await the debut of the team's new additions on the football field. Expectations are soaring in Pittsburgh, with aspirations of securing a playoff berth and making a serious postseason run.

This season marks a departure from the previous year's uncertainty, as the Steelers now boast a formidable roster and genuine playoff ambitions. With heightened excitement surrounding the team, all eyes are on the new defensive pieces to see if they can propel the Steelers towards Super Bowl contention in 2024.
