Newly signed, Shane Pinto to rejoin Senators after suspension
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Ottawa Senators signed forward Shane Pinto to a one-year deal on Friday, coinciding with his return to action following a gambling-related suspension.

He will receive a prorated portion of the $775,000 contract.

The league suspended Pinto, who was a restricted free agent, for 41 games on Oct. 26 for activities related to sports wagering. At the time, the NHL said in a statement that an investigation "found no evidence that Pinto made any wagers on NHL games."

When the suspension was handed down, the Senators said they wanted Pinto back.

"Shane is a valued member of our hockey club; an engaging, intelligent young man who made poor decisions that have resulted in a suspension by the National Hockey League. We know he is remorseful for his mistakes.

"The Ottawa Senators fully support the NHL's rules on gambling. While saddened to learn of this issue, the entire organization remains committed to Shane and will work together to do what is necessary to help provide the support to allow him to address his issues and become a strong contributor to our community.

"When the time is right and with the league's blessing, we will welcome him back to the organization and embrace him as one of our own."

Pinto recorded 35 points (20 goals, 15 assists) in 82 games in 2022-23. He has 43 points (21 goals, 22 assists) in 99 career games since being selected by Ottawa in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

The Senators host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday in their 41st game of the season. Pinto, 23, will be eligible to play on the road against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

"It's just awesome. It's special," Pinto said on Jan. 12 after skating with the team for the first time since he was suspended. "You kind of take it for granted, being around the team and how much the boys mean to you. It's just good to be back. ... It's been a long road for me and I'm just happy to be around the fellas."
