The Ottawa Senators are bringing a familiar face to training camp this fall.

According to Ian Mendes, who covers the Sens for The Athletic, Ottawa has signed Derick Brassard to a professional tryout contract. They’ll also be bringing Michael Dal Colle to training camp on a PTO, Mendes reported.

Brassard was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft. In 2013, he was traded to the New York Rangers in a multi-player deal that sent Marian Gaborik back to Columbus. Three years later, he was traded from New York to Ottawa in exchange for Mika Zibanejad.

Over parts of two seasons with the Sens, Brassard scored 32 goals and 77 points. He also chipped in 11 points in 19 playoff games as Ottawa made a surprising run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2017.

Most recently, Brassard inked a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers last season. At the trade deadline, he was shipped to the Edmonton Oilers for their playoff run. Brassard scored 19 points in 46 games between the Flyers and Oilers in 2021-22 and appeared in one playoff game.

Brassard has played 951 games in his NHL career and could reach the 1,000 games mark if he finds a place to play this season.

The other player the Sens are bringing to camp, Dal Colle, was selected No. 5 overall by the New York Islanders at the 2014 NHL Draft but hasn’t found his footing in the NHL.

Dal Colle has eight goals and 21 points over 112 career games in the NHL, all with the Islanders. Last year, Dal Colle scored 22 points in 39 AHL games for the Bridgeport Islanders and appeared in just one NHL game.
