Florian Wirtz is still on Manchester City’s radar despite reports he wants to stay in Germany
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

Manchester City remain interested in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz. Florian Plettenberg had earlier this week reported that the German international would prefer to stay in the Bundesliga. Despite this, the European champions are still interested in securing the signature of the prized midfielder.

Jamie Spencer and Graeme Bailey report for 90min.com of City maintaining interest in Wirtz. They add that the player will not be available in January as Bayer Leverkusen does not wish to lose any players. Leverkusen is currently sitting top of the Bundesliga as they chase their first-ever league title. Furthermore, Spencer and Bailey add that the European champions will face competition from Liverpool as well as Bayern Munich for the German international.

Graeme Bailey and Sean Walsh had previously reported that Manchester City had sent scouts to watch Florian Wirtz last month. The City scouts were present for Leverkusen’s 3-2 win over Hoffenheim. Wirtz put in an impressive display in front of the City scouting team as scored in his side’s win.

It does appear that the race for Florian Wirtz’s signature will heat up either in the upcoming summer transfer window or in 2025. His signature will become the subject of much speculation before his next club is known. German news outlet Kicker has reported that any potential fee for Wirtz would need to be over €100 million.

Given the quality of his performances and his undoubted talent the price tag for Wirtz does seem justified. He is one of Europe’s elite young attacking midfielders and his displays this season emphasise this.

Manchester City will face stiff competition to sign the midfielder if he does become available either this summer or in 2025.
